How the Vote was Won

In 2018 we toured a pop-up exhibition to venues around the UK to celebrate the centenary of some women getting the vote. You can book the exhibition to come to your venue or school too. Write to us at info@aurorametro.com

Background to the project

In 2010, with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, we built on the work of a previous project about the Actresses Franchise League with an exhibition titled ‘How the vote was Won’ which told the story of the way that the arts, music and media were used in the suffrage campaign. We also  included information about local suffragettes such as Princess Duleep Singh who campaigned on the basis of No Vote No Tax in Hampton Court where she lived at the palace.

Curated by Susan Croft and Irene Cockroft, Irene also loaned her unique collection of enamelled jewelry by suffragette Ernestine Mills for the exhibition. Over 5000 people attended the exhibition at the Museum of Richmond from all over the world.

In addition we ran several workshops for schools and provided talks by speakers such as Dame Shirley Williams. A historic walk was also offered looking at places of interest connected with the suffrage movement in the Richmond area.

A number of books were published  alongside the exhibition. You can learn more about them here.
